Comprehension: what helps
Comprehension depends on fluent word reading plus language understanding: vocabulary, background knowledge and reasoning. The Improving Reading Comprehension in Kindergarten Through 3rd Grade practice guide recommends explicitly teaching strategies such as predicting, questioning, visualising, monitoring and summarising, and discussing texts in depth.
Vocabulary: the engine of understanding
Children meet many new words in books that they rarely hear in conversation. Talk about interesting words as you read, revisit them over several days, and explore word parts (prefixes, suffixes and roots). Reading non-fiction on topics your child loves also builds the background knowledge that makes texts easier to understand.
